Unemployment in North Tipp Jumps by Almost 4,000 People in Two Years

September 2nd, 2010

Dole QueueDeputy Noel Coonan has slammed this Government for its failed and flawed policies as unemployment reached 7,712 in North Tipperary for the month of August, an increase of 3,950 on August 2008. The local Fine Gael TD said this jump of almost 4,000 in two years represents a Celtic Tiger that has long lost its roar in North Tipperary as constituents become more disillusioned with this dysfunctional Government.

“Nationally, unemployment has reached 13.8% and Ireland is experiencing a double-dipped recession. Alongside this, 36,438 households are now in mortgage arrears. While other countries are emerging from recession, Ireland remains in a cloud of gloom. The Government pumps billions into the banks and fails to put jobs first. Only this week Anglo Irish Bank reported losses of €8.2billion for the first six months of the year, yet this Government continues to sign blank cheques for the banks and dip its hands into taxpayers’ pockets,” said Deputy Coonan.

CSO figures for the month of August show Thurles is faring the worst at the moment with 3,201 people signing on; an increase of 65 people in one month. Meanwhile, there are 3,074 people on the dole in Nenagh and 1,437 in Roscrea.

“The number of professionals and middle class people signing on has grown sharply and nationally a shocking 2,500 people joined the dole last month. While the Enterprise Minister said the unemployment figures are frustrating and disappointing, this is no resolution for the thousands of families in North Tipperary who are unable to pay their mortgages and stuck in financial misery,” said Deputy Coonan.

The Government’s recently announced ‘work-for-dole’ initiative aims to get 10,000 dole claimants working in areas such as after school services and childcare in return for their benefits but Deputy Coonan said there are 445,000 people now on the dole and this gesture only causes a small ripple in a vast ocean.

“This initiative is welcome but it is too little too late. Fine Gael has been pushing the Government for measures to get people off the dole for some time. The large number of people signing on causes an extra €50 million strain in terms of additional social welfare payments that have to be doled out and also in lost taxes,” said the local Fine Gael TD.

Over the last two years since August 2008, Deputy Coonan said an additional 1,667 people have joined the dole queue in Nenagh. An extra 1,609 people have signed on in Thurles and the corresponding figure is 674 for Roscrea.

Fine Gael has called for urgent action from the Government to help young people who have been displaced to re-skill and gain work experience. The Opposition Party also wants an ambitious investment programme in the economic arteries of the future, measures to cut the cost of employing people and to promote flexible working arrangements which keep people attached to the workforce and a scheme to get credit flowing to small business.

Deadline is Extended for Receiving Applications under the Warmer Homes Scheme

August 30th, 2010

Deputy Noel Coonan has welcomed the news that last Friday’s deadline for receiving applications under the Warmer Homes Scheme has been extended. Due to a large demand for the scheme, no closing date has been decided for acceptance of forms. The local Fine Gael TD said North Tipperary people can still apply by ringing his office on 0504 32544 or contacting Sustainable Energy Ireland on 1800 250 204.

“My constituency offices have been inundated with queries about the scheme and in my conversation with Sustainable Energy Ireland I was informed last week that last Friday’s deadline was scrapped. This is welcome news for people who were anxiously trying to apply before week’s end,” said Deputy Coonan.

The Warmer Homes Scheme aims to improve the energy efficiency and warmth of homes that are lived in by people on low incomes. It is operated by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Ireland’s national energy agency. To qualify, you must live in a privately-owned home and be eligible for fuel allowance. A standard cost of approximately €150 may be charged for the work with the rest covered by the scheme.

Regional and community-based organisations are funded to carry out the work, which includes:

  • Attic insulation
  • Draught proofing
  • Lagging jackets
  • Energy efficient lighting (CFL bulbs)
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Energy advice.

Great Night Guaranteed at the Launch of Deputy Noel Coonan’s New Website

August 27th, 2010

The launch of Deputy Noel Coonan’s new website will take place next Friday 27th in Long Charlie’s Pub, Nenagh with an opportunity on the night to win tickets to Guns N’ Roses and accommodation following the gig in D4 Hotels, Dublin. The event will include food and music from the new, up-and-coming band ‘Gin & Juice’.

Along with Noel’s new facebook and twitter accounts, the new website www.noelcoonan.com accompanies Noel’s Fine Gael website and aims to discuss and increase public awareness about matters of concern in North Tipp.  The new website gives people another avenue through which to contact the Fine Gael TD with any queries or concerns.

Deputy Coonan said: “There will be a countdown to the live website launch with the event kicking off at 9.30pm. Local popular Nenagh band Gin & Juice are guaranteed to entertain and it’s shaping up to be a great night. All are welcome to come along and anyone interested in entering the draw for tickets to Guns N’ Roses, playing in Dublin’s o2 on 1st September, can leave me a message on my facebook page with your contact details or enter on the night.”

“The internet and social networking has undoubtedly become the newest coolest way of communicating for people worldwide and I’m happy to be entering the realm and becoming a more active participant. The internet is deeply embedded in everyday life and has become a prime way of getting in contact with North Tipperary constituents. I find it a very useful tool for keeping people up to date on issues I am raising and pursuing on their behalf,” continued the Fine Gael TD.

North Tipperary’s branch of Young Fine Gael will also be holding their next meeting next Friday night prior the launch in Deputy Coonan’s office, Pearse Street, at 8pm and anyone interested in joining is more than welcome to attend.

HSE Monster Fails to Deal Adequately with Back to School Applications and is Driving Parents to Moneylenders

August 24th, 2010

Deputy Noel Coonan said this Government has a lot to answer for as it fails disastrously to successfully administer this year’s Back to School Clothing and Footwear Scheme and as a result is driving North Tipperary parents to moneylenders. Last year, there was a huge delay in payments causing undue hardship to parents and the Fine Gael TD said this year is sadly no different.

Deputy Coonan said: “When people contact the Back to School Clothing and Footwear National Information Line they are advised to contact the Lo-Call Helpline which services North Tipperary, Clare and Limerick but in most cases people have rang the Lo-Call number without answer. This is causing added frustration for people who want to see firstly if their application has been received and secondly if it is valid. This demonstrates a total lack of consideration towards the public by the HSE at a time when families are under severe economic pressures. Unlike last year, there is no staff working solely on the helpline to answer questions from anxious parents. The 11 members of staff who are processing applications are also manning the helpline.

“Only this morning, a very anxious father came into my office and was close to tears because he cannot afford to buy uniforms for his three children and he fears they will be expelled if they return without adequate clothing. Last year, the constituent in question resorted to a money lender and plunged himself into debt. I was sure that lessons would be learned from last year and the HSE would ensure there was enough staff to process applications before children return to school but North Tipperary is one of the worst blackspots where no decision had been made on almost half of applications,” continued the Fine Gael TD.

“The HSE has admitted that there will be many families who will not be paid by the time school resumes. Last year, five additional staff was allocated to process the huge number of applications, albeit at a late date. I will continue to make representations to the HSE to try and speed up the process and help struggling families across the constituency,” concluded the local TD.
